A passenger tries out a pair of Rokid AR glasses on a Hainan Airlines flight in China. BEIJING — Hainan Airlines this week started letting passengers on some routes use Rokid's augmented reality glasses for free for in-flight entertainment, the tech startup announced Thursday. Chinese start-up Rokid claimed it's the first time AR glasses — which allow computer-generated images to be superimposed on the real world — have been used at scale on flights. The device allows wearers to see the real world using what the company calls "spatial computing" technology. He claimed Rokid was in talks "with lots of airlines" for similar partnerships, including at least one major international operator.

The ranking was based on eight factors — including seat comfort, free seat selection and pre-boarding for families — for a total of 18 possible points. Yet lap fees are common: all airlines charged them but for Hawaiian Airlines and Lufthansa. Asia — big on familyPraowpan Tansitpong, an assistant professor at Nida Business School, attributed the dominance of Asian airlines on the family-friendly list to a difference in business priorities.

CNN —Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines has defended imposing weight requirements on flight attendants after reports of the new policy went viral on social media and sparked a public backlash. “I just need the flight attendant to be fully qualified in professional knowledge, well-practiced in safety procedures, and wear the most suitable shoes and clothes for emergencies. Alaska Airlines also launched gender-neutral uniform guidelines for flight attendants last year; Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have adopted similar policies for greater inclusivity. Other Asian airlines have made headlines in recent years for imposing weight rules on cabin crew. In 2015, Air India asked 125 flight attendants to lose weight, while Pakistan’s national airline ordered cabin crew to abide by weight limits or face being grounded in 2019.

Boeing has more than 130 completed MAX jets in inventory for Chinese customers worth more than $15 billion at list prices, although airlines typically receive substantial discounts. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on April 14 released the second revision of its 737 evaluation report which incorporates updates to 737 MAX training and technical information. Chinese airlines begun returning the MAX to service in January led by China Southern (600029.SS) and as of April, all Chinese MAX operators have resumed flight operations, with 45 of 95 MAX jets now back in service, Calhoun said. China Eastern (600115.SS) and China Southern said in March they would resume taking delivery of MAX jets this year, without providing further details. The CAAC report is a reason for "incremental" optimism on MAX momentum in China, Myles Walton of Wolfe Research wrote in to a note to investors.

China Southern, which plans to hire 3,000 cabin crew this year, said it already had more than seven times as many applicants by the end of December. Before the pandemic, around 10% of cabin crew applications were typically successful, industry experts said. As the peak summer season approaches, Chinese airlines are adding international capacity.

BEIJING, April 11 (Reuters) - Boeing (BA.N) said on Tuesday that 11 Chinese airlines have resumed operation of the 737 MAX as of April 10, in a positive sign for the U.S. planemaker's attempts to rebuild its business in the world's second-largest aviation market. Based on these airlines, the number of 737 MAX returning to commerical service reached 43, accounting for approximately 45% of the Chinese 737 MAX fleet, the company also said in a social media post on its official WeChat account. Boeing did not name who the 11 airlines were but carriers including Hainan Airlines Holding Co Ltd (600221.SS), Fuzhou Airlines, Lucky Air and Air China (601111.SS) have flown the jets in the months since. "The move reaffirms our commitment to our civil aircraft customers in China," said Sherry Carbary, president of Boeing China. "The equipment upgrade allows us to further enhance our support for Chinese 737 MAX customers as they expand the aircraft's operations in and around China."
RIO DE JANEIRO, April 11 (Reuters) - Brazilian planemaker Embraer SA (EMBR3.SA) aims to sign a deal for the sale of 20 commercial jets to a Chinese airline during President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's visit to China this week, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. The deal would mark a breakthrough for Embraer in China, where it has struggled to find new business since the 2016 closure of a joint venture at a factory in Harbin. That venture with Chinese group Avic, launched in 2003 during Lula's first presidential term, produced a previous generation of regional jets and Legacy 650 executive jets. Embraer has delivered 110 commercial aircraft to Chinese airlines, including 70 to Hainan Airlines (600221.SS) and 20 to China Southern (600029.SS), according to securities filings. The planemaker has not received a new order from a Chinese airline since leaving Harbin in 2016.

Airfares from China are now 160% higher than before the pandemic, data from travel firm ForwardKeys shows, due to limited supply. Since Jan. 4, Air China (601111.SS), Hainan Airlines (600221.SS) and China Southern Airlines (600029.SS) have filed schedules with the U.S. Department of Transportation proposing to increase flights to as much as daily on some routes. Foreign carriers seeking to add flights to China require approvals from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, which did not respond to a request for comment. However, other flights were paused as it assessed market demand and government regulations. Many Western airlines parked large planes when international traffic plunged and production of new twin-aisle jets has been limited.
